“The French Rafale jet, the eventual winner, beat the Typhoon hollow both in terms of life cycle costs and direct acquisition costs. The entire MMRCA project cost would have gone up by around Rs 25,000 crore if Typhoon had been selected over Rafale,” a top defence ministry source said on Thursday.

“Prices have dipped… on news that the Greek bailout deal is once again delayed,” said Mr Victor Shum, senior principal at Purvin and Gertz international energy consultants in Singapore.
“There still isn’t sufficient confidence in the Euro Zone that the austerity measures taken by Greece will hold up,” he said.

How to deal with changes in fund attributes

http://www.moneyspidery.com/2012/02/07/how-to-deal-with-changes-in-fund-attributes/

The performance of a mutual fund depends on certain fundamental attributes, such as the quality of fund management, experience and qualification of fund manager, investment style and fund size. A change in these can impact the future performance of the fund, which, in turn, can alter the returns earned by an investor. Here are some changes that you should watch out for.

Fund merger: The asset management companies (AMCs) of mutual funds can merge to form a single entity. However, these are subject to Sebi approval and must conform to the regulations. Typically, mergers are viewed as beneficial for the AMCs involved as it tends to improve the overall efficiency through enhanced skills, lower costs and reduced competition. Investors must consider how their rights will be affected because of such mergers.

New Delhi: Facing sanctions by the US and the European Union, Iran has agreed to accept 45 per cent of the value of its oil exports to India in rupees to be parked in UCO Bank. This bank, headquartered in Kolkata, was selected because it has no US or European exposure — its overseas presence is limited to Hong Kong, Singapore and China.

This decision was arrived at after talks last month between New Delhi and Tehran aimed at ensuring stability in payments between the two nations.

Single Premium Life Insurance Policies losing favour with the insurance Regulator

http://www.moneyspidery.com/2012/02/03/single-premium-life-insurance-policies-losing-favour-with-the-insurance-regulator/

There is a lot being written on IRDA’s reluctance to approve new single premium life insurance products. Single premium life insurance products have been selling well with consumers opting for it more for the convenience factor rather than from an insurance coverage angle. From an insurance perspective, single premium policies definitely do not serve the purpose. Actually it does not serve the purpose from an investment angle also when compared to regular premium policies.

The comparatively low charges on single premium plans as compare to regular premium ones and the convenience of not having to pay for a long period of time seems to be tilting it in favour of single premium life insurance policies. Both Private Life Insurance Companies and LIC have seen good sales in the single premium insurance plans in the current financial year.

http://www.moneyspidery.com/2012/02/03/no-room-for-aggressive-rate-cuts-rbis-gokarn/

MUMBAI:
(Reuters) – There is no room for aggressive rate cuts in India in the current situation, Subir Gokarn, a deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India, told CNBC-TV18 on Friday.
Gokarn said a cut in the interest rates was the next logical step but would depend on other macro-economic factors.

The RBI cut banks’ cash reserve ratio, or the amount banks have to maintain with the central bank, by 50 basis points to 5.5 percent in its policy review on January 24 but kept its key policy rate unchanged.

These fund managers had stocked up on shares of consumer goods, pharma and auto companies – the winners in 2011 – in their portfolios, but the new year rally was led by a fresh lot, including infrastructure and metals, which were mostly laggards last year.

Their inability to shuffle their portfolios in a short period caused their schemes to under perform the benchmarks. Out of the 275-odd diversified equity funds, 155 have underperformed key indices over the past one month.

NHAI bond helps banks expand current account deposits

http://www.moneyspidery.com/2012/02/02/nhai-bond-helps-banks-expand-current-account-deposits/

The euphoria over the National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) bond issuance not only allowed the public sector entity to raise money for financing its operations, but also benefited banks by helping them expand their low-cost deposit base.

While mobilisation of CASA (current account savings account) deposits has been challenging for banks in the current environment of high-term deposit rates, the current account balances of top lenders like ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank increased in the last quarter — primarily because of flows related to NHAI bonds.

Irdas teaching guide for insurance agents

http://www.moneyspidery.com/2012/02/02/irdas-teaching-guide-for-insurance-agents/

The insurance regulator is determined to make agents graduate into “advisors” and is coming up with a detailed guideline that would make sale of a life insurance policy “need” or “suitability” based.

The stated intention is that it will not be a call of policy holders alone when it comes to choosing an insurance product. Rather it will depend on the profile of the policyholder, recommended by the agents.

The guidelines come with examples for ease of understanding. Here is a sample. “Rajan (name changed) is 28 years old, single, earning Rs 6 lakh per annum. He is supporting his parents financially and will also have to take care of his sister’s marriage. This means Rajan has tremendous financial responsibility and his demise will be a big blow to the family. So, for the financial safety of his family he needs life cover. The ideal product in this case would be a term assurance plan.”
