L&T Insurance ties up with women’s group for micro-insurance

hmedabad:   L&T Insurance on Thursday announced a strategic partnership with VimoSEWA, the national insurance cooperative promoted by the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), for the distribution of micro-insurance products specially designed to cater to the diverse needs of women workers of the informal economy and their families.

14 lakh workers

SEWA is a union of nearly 14 lakh poor, self-employed women workers who earn a living through their own labour or small businesses.

SEWA’s insurance programme was started in 1992 in response to their members’ continuing quest for social protection and self-reliance.

VimoSEWA, having a 6,000-strong member-base, provides integrated insurance services aimed at providing social protection for women and their families, to cover their various needs and the risks they face in their lives, said Ms Mirai Chatterjee, Director, Social Security, SEWA. VimoSEWA has become the first micro-insurance agent of L&T Insurance, she added.

Mr Y.M. Deosthalee, Chairman of the Board, L&T Insurance, said the micro-group health plan expected to be launched soon would cover 1.5 lakh lives in the next few years.

Simplified documents

Mr Joydeep Roy, CEO and Whole-time Director, L&T Insurance, said the beneficiaries of the new products would be provided simplified documents and forms in their own languages.The premium for these products would be between Rs 50 and Rs 730 a year. The company has already launched four classes of micro-insurance products.
